Abrams is the youngest of six children. She grew up in Gulfport, Mississippi, where her mother was a librarian and her father was a dockworker. The family moved to Atlanta when she was in high school. Her parents became United Methodist preachers there, and they taught in their children the importance of service to others and the church.
